The
Story of the Two Brothers
A
Promise Between Brothers
Two
young brothers, Albrecht and his sibling, shared the same dream: to become
artists. Their family was poor, and there was no way they could both afford
formal training. So they made a pact. One brother would work in the dangerous
local mines to support the other s studies. Later, when the trained brother
became successful, they would switch roles.
A
Sacrifice That Could Not Be Repaid
Albrecht
went on to study art and quickly showed extraordinary talent. When it was
finally time to honour the agreement and let his brother study, they discovered
the cost of his sacrifice. Years of hard labour had left his hands broken,
stiff, and permanently damaged. He would never be able to hold a brush with the
precision needed for art.
A
Tribute in Pencil and Ink
Deeply
moved by what his brother had given up, Albrecht created a drawing of those
worn, folded hands. It was his way of honouring the love, loyalty, and
sacrifice that had shaped his own success. The image became known as Praying
Hands.

A
Symbol That Outgrew the Legend
Although
historians note that the drawing was originally a study for a larger
altarpiece, the story of the two brothers has become inseparable from the
artwork. Today, the hands are recognised worldwide as a symbol of gratitude,
humility, and selfless devotion.
